The story that Dave van Ronk tells in concert is that he stole it from Eric von Schmidt who stole it from Dylan "who stole it from me" (or some such progression). There's a version of this on Dave van Ronk's "Folk Singer" album (early '60s sometime - 63, maybe) that, I have to say, just cuts Dylan's version to shreds (it also has great versions of "Motherless Children," "Cocaine," and "Hang Me Oh Hang Me (Been All Around this World)")
